The Warrior basketball program was started by Tom Sanders and Troy Prasatik in the spring of 1992 from the roots of HCYA's Sports Day program for homeschool families.
One junior high team and one senior high team competed at the State Homeschool Tournament that first year. The following fall, a limited number of games were arranged against small, local Christian schools. Our teams competed in the State and National Homeschool Tournaments.
Today, more than 60 homeschool athletes, both male and female, from elementary through high school, attend practices on Mondays and Wednesdays, September through March. Skill work and intramural play is emphasized. Our teams compete against other homeschool teams, as well as private and public schools. Each year, we compete at the Texas Homeschool State Basketball Championships as well as District, Regional, and National tournaments hosted by the National Christian Homeschool Championships.
The current program is led by Athletic Director Debbie Worley and Program Director Kevin Stewart, along with a vast team of volunteers. Funding is provided through fees, fundraisers, summer camps, and personal / corporate donations.
Over the years, the Warriors have won many homeschool tournaments and teams have frequently ranked 1st or 2nd in their divisions at the National Christian Homeschool Basketball Tournament. Several players from past years are currently playing at the college level.
Basketball excellence is a desired outcome of our program, but the greatest outcome is the Christian development of our children as well as the community we are building and nurturing to truly support local homeschool families. We are building on the legacy of HCYA leaders and families that came before us.
